DimmiDeck’s version of 20 questions! The players ask yes or no questions to guess who the other has chosen.

Topics Practised

Present simple question formation

Present continuous question formation (optional)

Descriptive vocabulary (clothes, colours, mood etc)

What You Need

1 x DimmiDeck

1-4 students

Setup

  1. Deal 10 male and 10 female Character Cards at random face up in a square.
  2. Player 1 chooses a card without telling the others who it is.
  3. Students take it in turns to ask yes or no questions to try and identify who Player 1 is thinking of. For example ‘are they wearing a blue jacket?’ or ‘Do they have blonde hair?’
  4. With every response, students eliminate cards by turning them face down.
  5. Players can ask a total of five questions before they have to guess. If they get it right, they get one point. If they get it wrong, Player 1 gets a point. Play continues until one player has 5 points. This person is the winner!

Notes

Using the question ‘do they have…’ for a single person at beginner level may be counter productive. For lower levels, we recommend that the first question be ‘is it a boy or a girl?’ before the game can continue with the simpler ‘does he/she have…/is he/she…?’ question form.

You should adapt the question format based on the activity goals. If you’re studying colours, use questions only involving colours. If you’re teaching physical description, like today, use only questions about physical description.
